The acid attack cycle
Every time sugar reaches the mouth, plaque bacteria produce acid for roughly 20–30 minutes. Saliva then neutralises it. Six sips of a soft drink spread across an afternoon means six separate acid attacks — far worse than drinking the whole glass at once.
Dry mouth is a hidden risk
Saliva is the body's natural buffer. Dehydration, mouth breathing and many common medications reduce saliva flow and sharply increase decay risk. Water through the day is genuinely protective.
Watch the 'healthy' drinks
Fruit juice, flavoured yoghurt drinks, sports drinks and lemon water are all acidic. Use a straw where possible and rinse with plain water afterwards.
Practical swaps
Plain water or unsweetened buttermilk between meals, sweets with a meal rather than between meals, and cheese or nuts as a tooth-friendly snack.
