Reading your symptoms
Short, sharp pain to cold that stops immediately usually means sensitivity or a small cavity. Lingering pain after hot or cold, or pain that wakes you at night, usually means the nerve is irreversibly inflamed and needs root canal treatment. Pain on biting with swelling means an abscess.
Why painkillers are a trap
Analgesics mask the symptom while the infection continues to spread through the root into the surrounding bone. Many extractions we perform could have been avoided by treatment two months earlier.
When it is an emergency
Facial swelling, difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth, fever with dental pain, or trauma that has knocked a tooth out — all need same-day attention.
A knocked-out tooth
Hold it by the crown, never the root. Rinse gently in milk or saline, and either reinsert it into the socket or transport it in milk. Reach a dentist within 30–60 minutes and it can often be saved.
