Your Child's First Dental Visit Should Be by Age 1

Not age six, not when a tooth hurts — the first birthday. Here is why early visits change everything.

The first-birthday rule

Dental associations worldwide recommend the first dental visit within six months of the first tooth appearing, and no later than the first birthday. The visit is mostly counselling — feeding habits, bottle use, brushing technique and fluoride.

Early childhood caries is common and preventable

Night-time bottle feeding and frequent sweetened drinks cause rapid decay of the upper front teeth in toddlers. It is entirely preventable with the right advice at the right time.

Building a fear-free child

A child whose first visit is a friendly counting-the-teeth game grows up without dental anxiety. A child whose first visit is an emergency extraction often carries that fear for life.

What we do at each stage

Age 1–3: counselling and fluoride varnish. Age 4–6: sealants on molars and habit assessment. Age 8–10: first orthodontic screening to check jaw growth and space.
